CARING FOR THE ELDERLY
OF THE ETHNOCULTURAL COMMUNITIES

May 2, 2006, from 9.30 AM to 4PM and May 3, 2006 from 9.30 AM to 12.30 PM

This training session is offered within the framework of an on-going research-action project which is being carried out at the Intercultural Institute of Montreal with the financial support from Canadian Heritage – Multicultural Programs.

“WE AREN’T UNDERSTOOD” :
“Sometimes, I would arrive alone at the CLSC with questions, but I never found answers because they do not understand me. A few times we used interpreters, but the interpreter would only say what he wanted and not what my needs are. No, I do not feel like I am well understood .”

says a 55 year-old man from Salvador

Goals :

This training workshop is based on a two-year research-action project carried out at the Intercultural Institute of Montreal in 2001-2003. It is designed to provide health and social service professionals with better understanding of the needs of the elderly in ethnocultual communities; and help develop intercultural approaches in their help-giving practices.

  • ARE THE NEEDS OF THE ELDERLY CULTURALLY DETERMINED ?
  • WHAT ARE THE SPECIFIC LIVING CONDITIONS OF THE ELDERLY IN THE ETHNOCULTURAL AND IMMIGRANT FAMILIES ?
  • HOW DO WE DECODE CULTURAL DIFFERENCES IN HELP-SEEKING BEHAVIOUR OF THE ELDERLY AND THEIR FAMILIES ?
  • WHAT ARE THE CONSEQUENCES OF THESE DIFFERENCES ON THE HELP DELIVERY OR INTERVENTION PROCESS ?
  • WHAT ARE THE SKILLS REQUIRED TO WORK IN AN INTERCULTURAL SITUATION ?
