Activity:
REVISITING FEMINISM: CULTURAL TRAJECTORIES
Presentation and debate of Issue
150
Type: Launch of Issue 150 : InterCulture
Friday, May 5, 2006, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Women’s liberation movements and modernist feminist movements
of today are framed within an evolutionist “traditional-modern”
paradigm and are marked by the historical processes of western societies
and their perceptions of women’s realities. Feminism based
on a developmentalist philosophy and on programs that seek to improve
women’s situations ultimately reinforce the image of woman
as victim.
This issue of InterCulture is an attempt to reverse the reductionist
trend that views women as victims. This perspective often undermines
women’s understanding of the self as integral to human and
other-than-human collectivities. Such a trend also results in the
destruction of the fabric of communities – both human and
other-than-human – in different geo-cultural regions of the
world. This initiative invites readers to explore alternative ways
of addressing women’s issues in contemporary societies.
