Roundtable of the InterCulture

Reflections concerning pluralistic Quebec:
a public forum to further dialogue following the Bouchard-Taylor
Commission
Date: Thursday, November 26th 2009, from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Location: Marguerite-d'Youville Building, Université de
Montréal
2375, Côte Sainte-Catherine Road, room 4030 (4th floor, seminar
room at the Faculty of Theology and Religious Sciences)
Goals :
Four briefs
presented to the Bouchard-Taylor Commission have been revisited
in the April 2009 issue of the journal InterCulture journal, published
by the Intercultural Institute of Montreal. During this round table
discussion, we will review the different issues regarding cultural
diversity and pluralism in Quebec.
These briefs present a critique of prevailing models (in Quebec,
in Canada and elsewhere) regarding integration policies of recent
immigrants in order to generate other ways of thinking about cultural
diversity. They provide some clarifications concerning terms and
aspects related to reasonable accommodation, (orthodoxy, women’s
rights, the hijab, Islamic apparel, etc.). They also analyze relations
between multiple identities and the dynamics of power, and raise
questions about the “homogeneity” of the French Quebecois
culture. In addition, the IIM will present an “intercultural
perspective” on the questions of diversity and pluralism.
Finally, each of these presentations will offer different points
for reflection and orientation.
