Introduction
Forty years already! And still so young, because of the inexhaustible
source of interculturalism. Initially known as the Monchanin Centre,
and subsequently as the Monchanin Cross-cultural Centre, the Intercultural
Institute of Montreal (IIM), founded in 1963 and incorporated in
1968, remains a beacon in intercultural awareness in Quebec and
in Canada. From its beginnings, the IIM initiated intercultural
reflection that has become a common concern for all in all societies.
Over the period of forty years, it has developed an expertise in
combining reflection, action, and the sharing of real life experiences
of intercultural alternatives on the local level, as well as in
the national and international arenas. This has been accomplished
in different fields: community action, health education, social
services, international cooperation… Throughout the years,
the IIM has remained constant in its intercultural vision of a world
nourished by the roots of cultural diversity. A world view based
on people, communities, and grass roots organizations; a vision
that facilitates the dialogue and cooperation between people all
over the world, an interchange of their knowledge and their collective
wisdom.
These forty years of existence represent an exploit for the IIM,
since it was sometimes necessary to navigate against popular opinion
and to survive different crises (financial, political, and geopolitics)
without ever losing its essence.
TOGETHER – BECAUSE WE ARE DIFFERENT! This could have been
a slogan for any anniversary, but it fortells the multi-hued diversity
of a rainbow; today, having reached its maturity, the IIM is better
able to appreciate its significance. Harmonious interethnic relations
are generally considered desirable, however, their potential to
transform a pluralistic world remains poorly understood. Encompassing
at the same time that which differentiates us and that which draws
us towards one another, this slogan, "TOGETHER -- BECAUSE WE
ARE DIFFERENT", invites and challenges us to deal with our
irrefutable differences, while maintaining a dialogue with one another.

Three activities are planned for this anniversary:
First Activity : Promotion
of our latest publications (Thursday November 13th, 2003)
Throughout its existence, the IIM has produced and edited numerous
documents related to its activities. These publications have become
valuable resources for intercultural action. Its fortieth anniversary
represents an ideal occasion to highlight the importance and excellence
of this body of work.

Second Activity :
2- Celebration of the thirty-fifth anniversary of the journal Interculture
and a homage to its founder and director, Robert Vachon. (Thursday,
November 20th, 2003)
Our fortieth anniversary affords an auspicious occasion to honour
the contribution of Robert Vachon, co-founder and former director-general
of the IIM (1970-1979). From its beginnings as the Monchanin Centre
up to the present day, the Institute has been indelibly marked by
his continual intercultural quest. This remarkable odyssey is expressed
particularly through the journal Interculture, of which Robert Vachon
has been director for 35 years. Inspired by his vision, Interculture
sees itself as a journal for "an intercultural alternative
and alternative interculturalism" to address the major issues
of our times. The journal has always been a vehicle for reflection,
discussion, alternative thinking and dialogue between men and women
of various cultural horizons active on different continents.

Third Activity :
A celebration and a fundraiser (Saturday, November 29th, 2003)
Forty years calls for a celebration! While we would like to maintain
simplicity during this event, our intercultural traditions inspire
us to organize the "feast of the nations". During this
intercultural evening, we offered some little known examples of
the richness of cultural diversity. There were songs and dances,
story telling and gastronomy, as well as many other cultural expressions
of various peoples.
