Research in ROOTS
This database aims at being instrumental for the recognition of
knowledge and practices rooted in local cultures worldwide. It is
created in order to seek out existing documents and organise collected
information in a manner that will be appropriate for research and
action on intercultural alternatives to development. In order to

in ROOTS database, please consult our glossary.
Simple search: You can type a word or a short
phrase in the filed KEY WORD(S). The search will be done among the
titles, the notes or the summaries of the references in this Database.
Use Advanced Search, if you wish to search by AUTHOR, SUBJECT, YEAR OF PUBLICATION,
or by other criterion.

HELP
Roots Database contains thousands of bibliographical references
of monographs and periodical articles. These references are accompanied
by notes and summaries written in the language of the documents.
This Database is easy to use. You can search not only by key words
in the title, notes or the summary of the document, but also by
subject, geographical, ethnographical or religious descriptors.
For further information, please consult our glossary and the hierarchical
list of descriptors.
You can specify the display and the print options for the results
of the search.

SIMPLE SEARCH
You can type a word or a short phrase in the filed KEY WORD(S)
and click on SEARCH button. The search will be done among the titles,
the notes or the summaries of the references in this Database.
N. B. The data base system will do the research on a string or
a word group. For instance if you write on the query box Culture,
the result of your query can contains the word Agriculture or Interculture.
In order to make a new search you have to clear the words in the
field KEY WORD(S), type the new word(s) and click on the SEARCH
button again.

ADVANCED SEARCH
You can specify a search by one or more criteria with the help
of the search form. The data base system will do the research on
the selected field(s). The result of the query contains entire word
or word group chose. Do the following:
Type a word or a short phrase in the field KEY WORD(S). This (these)
word(s) will be searched among the titles, notes or summaries of
the references.
In the field AUTHOR type the family name and first name of an author,
separated by a comma.
In the field PERIODICAL TITLE type the title or a part of the title
of the periodical document.
In the filed COLLECTION type the name or a part of a name of a
collection of documents.
In the filed LANGUAGE choose one or several languages. Use the
logical operators (AND/OR) in order to refine your search by holding
down the CTRL key (IBM) or the COMMANDE key (Macintosh) for a multiple
choice.
With the help of the pick list in the TYPE box choose the type
of documents. By default the search will be done for both monographs
and periodical articles.
After selected an appropriate radio button, indicate the YEAR OF
PUBLICATION by typing an exact year or by indicating the period
between two years.
Apart from the bibliographical search criteria described above
you can make a search more specific by using the following subject
search criteria:
In the filed DESCRIPTOR choose one or several criteria from the
alphabetical list. Do not forget to use the logical operators (AND/OR)
to refine your search and hold down the CTRL key (IBM) or the COMMANDE
key (Macintosh) for a multiple choice. For more information on the
descriptors, consult our glossary and our list of descriptors.
In the field ETHNO-CULTURAL / RELIGIOUS GROUP choose one or several
criteria from the alphabetical list. Do not forget to use the logical
operators (AND/OR) to refine your search and hold down the CTRL
key (IBM) or the COMMANDE key (Macintosh) for a multiple choice.
In the field COUNTRY choose one or several countries from the alphabetical
list. Do not forget to use the logical operators (AND/OR) to refine
your search and hold down the CTRL key (IBM) or the COMMANDE key
(Macintosh) for a multiple choice.
After making your choice for search with the different criteria
you have to click on the SEARCH button. By default the results are
displayed in alphabetical order of the title.
Click on PREVIOUS icon of the browser to return to the search form
containing the criteria you have selected. Add criteria or change
you choice, then click on SEARCH to start a new search.
Click on RESET. A new search form will be displayed allowing you
to make a new search.

SORT
In order to have the references displayed in another order you
have to go to the search form and choose from the SORT pick list
the desired order (by title, periodical title, year of publication)
in which the results will be displayed.

DISPLAY OF RESULTS
After you have activated a search, the first page of results gives
the number of references found according to the given criteria.
After that you will have the short description of the first 10,
25 or 50 references displayed (depending how many you specify in
the search form). At the end of the list you can see the buttons
PREVIOUS and NEXT which help to access to the other pages one by
one and the button ALL to display the list of short descriptions
of all the results of your search.
Click on DETAILS in order to access the detailed description of
a selected reference where you can read a short summary of the document.
Yet not all references are accompanied by a summary. At the end
of the page you can see the buttons PREVIOUS and NEXT which help
to access one by one the detailed description of the results of
your search. To return to the list of short descriptions you have
to click on the LIST button.

PRINT
Click on the PRINT icon of the browser and you will have a print-out
of the results of your search - either short descriptions or the
detailed description.
